Email my friend ShareThere was drama aplenty in the second round of matches in Group 1 this week. After Group 1's opening fixtures, which saw Egypt beat Trinidad and Tobago 4-1 before Paraguay and Italy played out a scoreless draw, most observers expected the host country to progress smoothly to the knockout phase of the FIFA U-20 Word Cup 2009. However, when Paraguay's Paniagua struck a last-gasp winner past Egypt's Aly Lotfi on matchday two, the Pharaohs suddenly found the tables had turned.
Thursday's showdown between Egypt and Italy will now decide if the hosts can join the already-qualified
Azzurrini in the next round. With the pressure firmly on the home side, their passionate supporters will be doing everything possible to help the team progress in the tournament.
Despite the daunting prospect of taking on the hosts in Cairo, Italy midfielder Andrea Mazzarani told
FIFA.com his side would be treating the fixture as just another game: "It's going to be very exciting to play Egypt in front of their home fans, but our preparations won't be different."
Though guaranteed a last-16 berth, Italy have yet to show the form that made them UEFA U-19 runners-up, and even their recent win against Trinidad and Tobago proved a struggle. However, Mazzarani insists he is
not concerned and that his team expect to continue progressing.

Email my friend ShareTHE DAY REPLAYED - Egypt made all the headlines as Groups A and B came to a close. Urged on by a typically noisy home crowd at the Cairo International Stadium, the tournament hosts shrugged off Italy's challenge to come out on top in their section.
Earlier in the day, Spain eased past Venezuela to take the honours in Group B, while Nigeria made sure of third place with a resounding win over Tahiti. The Flying Eagles now face an anxious wait to find out if they have done enough to go through as one of the best third-placed teams.
Finally, Trinidad and Tobago made a little piece of history when they secured their first ever point in the competition.
ResultsVenezuela 0-3 Spain
Tahiti 0-5 Nigeria
Trinidad and Tobago 0-0 Paraguay
Italy 2-4 Egypt

Goal of the dayTahiti 0-5 Nigeria, Nurudeen Orelesi 45 Needing a big win to have any chance of going through to the next phase, Nigeria did not care about the quality of the goals they scored so much as the quantity. Yet that did not stop Orelesi from manufacturing a stunning strike right on the interval. Collecting the ball on the left side of the penalty box, he unleashed a left-footed rocket into the top right-hand corner of the goal. So hard did he strike the ball, in fact, that it burst the net.
Memorable momentsTwins in trouble: The fans at the Cairo International Stadium witnessed an unusual piece of football history when Tahitian twins Lorenzo and Alvin Tehau were both sent off against Nigeria. Lorenzo saw red eight minutes before half-time and his brother followed him in for an early bath with a quarter of an hour remaining.
Booking woe: Seven minutes after scoring Italy's first equaliser against Egypt, Umberto Eusepi picked up a yellow card that will rule him out of Italy's Round-of-16 match. Realising his fate, the young Italian burst into tears before bravely getting back on with the game.
Soca rhythm: Trinidad and Tobago's failure to negotiate their way out of the group stage did not stop their dancing fans from having a party at the Al Salam Stadium in Cairo. Inspired by their swaying supporters' chants of "Defence! Defence!", the Soca Warriors stood firm against the dominant Paraguayans to collect their first ever point at the FIFA U-20 World Cup finals.
The stat
1800 - It might have seemed unremarkable at the time, but Daniel Adejo's strike in Nigeria's 5-0 win over Tahiti was a milestone goal: the 1800th in the history of the FIFA U-20 World Cup. The first was scored 33 years ago, on 27 June 1977, by Italian Luigi Capuzzo.
Fan's view"What a win & what a goal for the fourth by Bogy. I think it's the best goal of the tournament till now!!!"

I wonder who may care about the number of people attending a given match! Are you amongst the ones that when somebody points for them the Moon, they actually look only at the finger? I am concerned on the field result and the result says that Italy lost and lost badly! I would like to ask to the Azzurrini if they realize they are at the WC U-20 and not on holidays at Sharm el-sheik!
